Modbus TCP/IP

The Modbus TCP/IP fieldbus, based on Ethernet hardware, was born as an evolution of the classic Modbus RTU fieldbus, a communication protocol born in the late 1970s which has become one of the most widespread and used standards in the world of industrial devices.
Unlike Modbus RTU on RS485 serial interface, where it is possible to receive commands from a single master, the Ethernet-based Modbus TCP/IP communication protocol allows multiple masters to connect to the same slave, as long as a different TCP port is used.
For this reason, Ever Elettronica devices have, in addition to the standard TCP port, 2 additional TCP ports for connection: so, they allow both the connection with the diagnostic tools (produced by Ever Elettronica) and, at the same time, the connection with the machine PLC.
This specific feature distinguishes us: in fact, it is not a feature that can be easily found in other Modbus TCP/IP slave fieldbus devices on the market, since most of them only implement the standard TCP 502 port.

What are the advantages of the Modbus TCP/IP fieldbus?

  • Modbus is a protocol created for use in the industrial field
  • The Modbus Organization does not require royalties for the use of the technology and makes available all the necessary documentation for its implementation
  • The Modbus protocol is very simple to implement, even on devices with limited computing capacity or limited memory
  • The Modbus protocol is very fast and efficient especially on serial interfaces
  • There are both commercial and free libraries for quick implementation in your own solutions
  • Most industrial devices support the Modbus protocol
  • The Modbus TCP/IP protocol has an higher speed than Modbus RTU protocol, as it is no longer based on the RS485 connection but on the more advanced and modern Ethernet connection

Among the various types of objects defined by Modbus protocol, the Holding Registers are supported to access all the operating parameters of the device.
The supported Modbus functions are: 3 (Read multiple Holding Registers), 6 (Write single Holding Register), 16 (Write multiple Holding Registers), 23 (Read / Write multiple Holding Registers).
